In Tuesdays with Morrie, the main character is afraid of death as well as the majority of Americans. Americans are afraid of death because we want more than what we have, especially more time. Americans don't want to die because we have so many material items we don't want to leave. I know that for me personally I can definitely wait for death because I'm young and want a lot for my upcoming years. People also don't want to leave their loved ones and maybe even accomplishments behind. Death is a taboo topic in America because people avoid talking about it and its uncomfortable even though we all know we will have to face it one day. Americans also value youth and teenagers and adolescence believe they're invincible.

  1. I don't think amercans fear death because of losing material items. I think we are just scared of not knowing what comes next. We always need to be in control and not knowing what comes after death scares us.

  2. I agree with death being such a forbidden topic to bring up. Most of us are scared because it's something we've never known, we have no past knowledge. Because of this we are somewhat left in the dark, so most people just don't know how to deal with that. I agree that it is also very hard to say goodbye to loved ones and to everything you've ever known.

  3. I think the material side of our culture gives us a focus on more of the physical aspects of our lives - not so much on who we touched, interacted with or affected postively.
